The purpose of this annual observance is to encourage individuals to get tested for HIV and know their HIV status. One out of every five Americans who is infected with HIV does not know it because s/he has never been tested. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all sexually active Americans get tested for HIV as part of their routine health care. Women now comprise one-half of all HIV and AIDS cases worldwide. In the United States, women now make up 25% of all new HIV infections. AIDS is one of the leading causes of death of women of color and the number one killer of African American women ages 25–34.
